Ruling Party Aims To Fast-Track Works On Election Law Changes

POLAND

Poland's ruling Law and Justice party will aim to change the country's election law well ahead of this year's parliamentary election, possibly as soon as this month, lawmaker Marek Ast told PAP newswire today.

  • According to a ruling by Poland's Constitutional Court, any tweaks to the election law must be implemented at least half a year before before an election is called. Ast told PAP that the ruling party will try to adopt new legislation before that deadline.
  • The changes proposed by the ruling party include measures to boost turnout in smaller towns and villages, such as setting up more polling stations or providing free transport for the elderly during the election.
  • The proposed changes have drawn criticism from the opposition quarters, with pro-turnout measures said to be targeting groups that form Law and Justice's core electorate.
  • Law and Justice lawmakers will consult the proposed legislation with the National Electoral Commission and local government representatives today at 12:30 CET.
  • Poland will hold elections to both houses of parliament in October or November this year.
