Ruling Party Leader Steps Down Ahead Of 2024 Elections

SOUTH KOREA

Yonhap News Agency reports that South Korea's ruling People's Power Party (PPP) leader Kim Gi-hyeon has stepped down to stabilise the party and secure a victory in next year's parliamentary elections.

  • Kim held low profile over the past couple of days as pressure was been mounting on him to resign and not to run in the upcoming elections amid turmoil within the party and a recent by-election defeat in Gangseo-gu.
  • Kim's resignation was preceded by an announcement of Chang Je-won, a close confidante of President Yoon Suk-yeol, that he would not run in the elections, which reportedly triggered renewed debate on the optimal course of action.
