Ruling Party Still Debates Scope Of Referendum

POLAND
  • Ruling Law and Justice party replaced the head of its campaign staff with MEP Joachim Brudzinski, a close aide of party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, as part of a "reset" of it strategy for the upcoming parliamentary election. Another recent move intended to mobilise the voter base was the announcement of a referendum on the EU migrant relocation scheme, which could be held alongside the election. The party's Secretary General told PAP newswire that the referendum will "certainly be mostly about the forced relocations of illegal migrants" but "it cannot be ruled out entirely" that there will be other questions as well.
  • Rzeczpospolita reports that tensions surrounding Ukrainian grain imports continue to simmer, with agricultural issues becoming a key bone of contention in otherwise positive Polish-Ukrainian relations. Poland is under pressure to address the concerns of local farmers ahead of the upcoming election, which is expected to be a tight race.
  • Deputy Finance Minister Artur Sobon told Polsat News that the Ministry of Climate and Environment will be responsible for implementing a windfall tax. The Ministry is currently working on the tax, in line with relevant EU legislation.
  • BusinessInsider reports that the NBP may have been the largest buyer of gold among all of the world's central banks in May, boosting its holdings by an estimated 20 tonnes of the yellow metal (per bankier.pl/Tavex calculations).
