UK: Rumours flying of snap general election that could hamper any attempts by
anti-no deal Brexit MPs to pass legislation tying the gov'ts hands.
- PM Johnson to meet Cabinet at 1700BST then address Conservative MPs from
1800BST.
- Election would likely take place before Oct 31 if called over next week. Would
require support of 2/3 of MPs.
- Would be very risky for Conservatives, relying on hard-Brexit talk
neutralising the Brexit Party while hoping Remain vote would be split between
Labour, Lib Dems and Greens.
- GE eliminates anti-no deal Conservative MPs from equation as they won't be
able to stand on party manifesto or risk deselection.
- Labour's support for election at any point could backfire, in allowing Johnson
a way out when he was facing difficult legislative period.
