Russia, China Deepen Cooperation on Atomic Technology

  • China and Russia are deepening cooperation on a key atomic technology that has Pentagon planners on edge because of its potential to upset the global balance of nuclear weapons, Bloomberg report. Russian President Putin and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping announced a long-term deal to continue developing so-called fast-neutron reactors. Despite sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s nuclear exports have surged over the last year. China’s fast-reactors are based on Russian technology.
  • Bloomberg report that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of mercenary group Wagner, is preparing to scale back his private army’s operations in Ukraine after Russian military chiefs succeeded in cutting key supplies of men and munitions, people familiar with the matter said. Wagner troops so far have failed to take the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut despite months of trying. Now, Prigozhin is planning to shift focus back to Africa, the people said.
  • Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has become a full member of Politburo 2.0, the informal decision-making center of the Russian leadership, Minchenko Consulting experts say as cited by Kommersant.
  • Mishustin will present the government’s annual report to the lower chamber of parliament today. The Bank of Russia will report weekly gold and FX reserve data at 1300 GMT/1600 local time.
