Kremlin spox Dmitry Peskov has claimed that F-16 fighter jets sent to Ukraine 'will be shot down' and 'will not influence the battlefield'. Adds that 'rewards for shooting them down have already been offered I believe.' The first delivery of the advanced US-made jets arrived in Ukraine on 31 July, just squeezing inside the deadline set by Kyiv and its allies.
- At present it is unknown whether the jets will be utilised immediately or if more time is still needed to train Ukrainian pilots to fly them, with issues over the supply of spare parts and language barriers between trainers and pilots holding up the deployment.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been explicit in claiming that the F-16s will be crucial to the war effort, and once operational they will provide additional protection to Ukrainian cities and key infrastructure from Russian missile and drone attack.
- July 31 saw what Kyiv claims was the largest drone attack since the start of the war launched, primarily against the capital. The Ukrainian air force says that it shot down all 89 Iranian-designed Shahed-131 and 136 attack drones, as well as numerous decoys intended to divert air defences.
- In recent weeks Russia has madesustained advancesin the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, expending significant materiel and manpower but neverthless taking crucial territory from depleted Ukrainian battalions.
