RUSSIA: Def Min-'Preparing Retaliatory Measures' To Ukraine ATACMS Strikes

RUSSIA

The Russian Defence Ministry has claimed that Ukraine has struck the Kursk oblast with US-made ATACMS long-range ballistic missiles twice in the last three days. Adds that Russia is 'preparing retaliatory measures'. It remains to be seen what these measures could be, with the launch of what is believed to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile at the city of Dnipro last week sparking major global concern last week.

  • Overnight, Russia launched what Kyiv said was a 'record' 188 drones targeting key infrastructure. Ukraine claims to have shot down 76, with a further 95 brought down by electronic interference or lost to radar. It did not specify whether the remaining 17 drones struck their intended targets.
  • The increasing scale of missile and drone strikes by Russia and Ukraine signals an escalation in the conflict. It remains to be seen how long this can be sustained given what are believed to be limited stocks of long-range missiles provided to Ukraine by its allies, while on the Russian side the use of IRBM's is likely to prove limited given their mammoth cost per unit.
