RUSSIA-Lula, Putin Discuss Brazil-China Ukraine Proposal & BRICS Summit

BRAZIL

The office of Brazilian President Luia Inacio Lula da Silva confirms a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Lula's office says the two 'discussed the Brazil-China peace proposal for Russia-Ukraine'. They also discussed bilateral relations and topics for the upcoming BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia (22-24 Oct).

  • Last week in an interview with Brazil's Metropoles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, when asked on Brasilia's position on the war, “Unfortunately, I believe that they [the Brazilian government] are taking Russia’s side.” He also called the joint Chinese-Brazilian roadmap from May "destructive, it’s just a political statement", complaining that Ukraine was not consulted on the document, saying “We are not stupid. How can you offer ‘here is our initiative’ without asking anything from us? This is a lack of respect toward Ukraine.”
  • Zelenskyy's comments earned anindirect rebukefrom Lula. Speaking at the graduation ceremony for diplomats at the Rio Branco Institute on 16 Sep Lula talked up Brazil's role in energy, food, and raw material production, claiming, "That's why it's important for Brazil not to take part in the war in Ukraine and Russia, that's why it's important for Brazil to say that we want peace, we don't want war. Those who want to talk to us now could have talked to us before the war started,"
