RUSSIA: PM Johnson Speaks w/Putin On Ukraine Tensions

A Downing St spokesman has confirmed that earlier today PM Boris Johnson spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing heightened tensions on the Ukrainian border (full readout below).

  • The spox stated that the PM "expressed the UK's deep concern over the build-up of Russian forces on Ukraine's border, and reiterated the importance of working through diplomatic channells ot deescalte tensions and identify durable solutions."
  • "The PM emphasies the UK's commitment to Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty, and warned that any destabilising action would be astrategic mistake that would have significant consequences."
  • "He [Johnson] also regonised the importance of dialogue on international and regional security, and they agreed it is imperative that all sides respect the terms of the Minsk Protocol"
  • The comments from Johnson seem in line with a number of other Western leaders, as well as the EU and NATO, warning of 'significant consequences' for any intervention in Ukraine, but certainly not committing to boots on the ground or even materiel support for Kyiv.
