Russia shipped a diesel cargo to Syria onboard a tanker under US sanctions, Reuters reports citing LSEG data.
- Marks the first known direct supply of diesel from Russia to Syria since at least 2013.
- The Barbados-flagged vessel Prosperity (previously known as Gabon-flagged NS Pride) was loaded with about 37k tons of ultra-low sulphur diesel at the port of Primorsk on Feb. 8. The tanker is anchored near the Syrian port of Banias, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters.
- The tanker and its Dubai-based management company Fornax Ship Management are both under US sanctions.
- The final destination of the cargo is unclear. Russia has two military installations in Syria.
- Syria has also issued an import tender for 20k tons of LPG and was seeking to import oil as no shipments have arrived from Iran since November, according to Kpler data cited by Reuters.
- Syria’s two refineries, located in Homs and Banias, ceased operating after the Assad regime fell.
