Russian Army Chief-Ukraine Offensive In Kursk Region Halted

UKRAINE

Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov has claimed that the Ukrainian offensive into the Kursk Oblast of the Russian Federation has been halted. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a security council meeting in Moscow with Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu and FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov in attendance, as well as Gerasimov via videolink.

  • State-run Tass reports"The Russian Defense Ministry reported that no breakthrough deep into Russian territory was allowed, and the operation to destroy Ukrainian formations in the area of the state border continues. The Ukrainian Armed Forces lost 260 militants and 50 armored vehicles, including tanks and anti-aircraft missile systems, during the day. " These claims have not been independently verified.
  • The Ukrainian offensive has garnered significant attention given that the gas transit hub for the critical Druzhba pipeline is located on the border close to the Russian town of Sudzha (see 'UKRAINE: Incursion Into Russia's Kursk Region Would Be Most Significant To Date', 1323BST).
  • The northern border regions away from the main frontlines in the Donbas have become an increasingly active military warzone in recent months. Russia launched a renewed offensive from the Belgorod Oblast towards the city of Kharkiv in May, while villages in Belgorod have been subject to Ukrainian shelling. The border region between Russia's Kursk and Ukraine's Sumy oblasts has seen little fighting since Ukraine's 2022 summer counteroffensive that repelled Russian forces around Kharkiv.
