Russian Urals ship-to-ship transfers have soared after the December 5 EU ban.

  • A total of 19 million barrels of the crude will likely get transferred at sea in December and January, according to Bloomberg vessel tracking. The January tally alone is likely to set a record at 14 million barrels.
  • Locations, such as Ceuta and Greece’s southern city Kalamata, are once again becoming hotspots.
  • The move to use STS transfers is to try and overcome soaring freight costs and operate with a depleted fleet.
