Russia’s Finds New Site off Morocco for STS Operations

OIL

Traders of Russian oil have found a new location for STS activity, having encountered pressure from the Greek Navy, according to Bloomberg.

  • Tankers carrying Urals are transferring cargoes at sea off the coast of the Moroccan city of Nador.
  • Greece’s Laconian Gulf was previously the preferred location, but since May, the Greek navy has been holding military exercises in the area used for STS activity. This has been a method to stifle the STS activity.
  • The new location is close to the Spanish enclave of Melilla, which could lead to Spain taking similar action to Greece as a way of curbing the operations. Spain already took action to block such STS activity of Russian cargoes near its exclave of Ceuta.
