SARB Gov Kganyago Says Taming Inflation Is Not Over, Tsy's Modise May Become New Dep Gov

  • South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Governor Lesetja Kganyago told the Financial Times that "the job of taming inflation is not yet done," reiterating that "the arrival of one swallow does not make a summer." He also noted that there are ongoing discussions on whether and how to tap the government's gold and foreign exchange reserves held at the central bank.
  • The Business Times reported that the Treasury's Mampho Modise will likely replace Kuben Naidoo as SARB Deputy Governor. Modise is believed to be the preferred choice of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.
  • Eskom suspended loadshedding in the wake of last week's flare-up and said that it would alternate between no power cuts and Stage 2 outages until further notice.
  • The key event this week is Finance Minister Godongwana's budget speech scheduled for Wednesday.
