Scholz-Gov't Is Seeking Swift Discussion w/COM On Gas Levy VAT

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaking on the incoming gas levy:

  • Scholz: "Gov't will decide quickly on citizen relief measures'.
  • Regarding VAT exemption on gas levy, Scholz says gov't is "Seeking quickly a discussion with the European Commission to find a solution before the levy comes into effect".
  • Under EU law regarding VAT on energy products, the new levy will be considered part of the overall price for gas, and therefore subject to additional VAT costs. Berlin seeking a waiver from Brussels to avoid placing more strain on households.
  • German population remains overwhelmingly pro-EU, but if the Commission insists on additional VAT charge it could provide boost to eurosceptic right-wing Alternative for Germany given the increasing inflationary pressures faced by German households at present.
