Scholz Reportedly Seeking To Formalise Ukraine NATO Non-Membership

NATO

New York Times Moscow Bureau Chief Anton Troianovski has reported that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is planning to formalise Ukranian non-membership in NATO.

  • 'After leaving the Kremlin tonight, Scholz had a separate news conference with German-speaking reporters. In it, he made it clear that he was seeking to formalize Ukraine's non-membership in NATO as a way of averting war'.
  • Scholz: 'The fact is that all involved know that NATO membership for Ukraine is not on the agenda. Everyone must step back a bit here and make it clear to themselves that we just can't have a military conflict over a question that is not on the agenda.'
  • This is an unprecedented concession from the German Chancellor and it is likely that the US will object strongly. The US has reiterated that NATO's 'open door policy' must remain in place and the US cannot impose policy directives on future administration.
  • President Biden is preparing to speak at the White House on Ukraine and is unlikely to field questions from the press pack. It is unclear how the US will react to this proposal if confirmed by Germany.
