Scholz Says NSII Halt 'To Be Discussed' If Russia Invades Ukraine

GERMANY

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday alongside NATO Sec-Gen Jens Stoltenberg, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that his gov't would discuss the halting of the Nord Stream II gas pipeline from Russia to Germany should Russian military forces make an incursion into Ukrainian territory along the country's eastern border.

  • Scholz stated that "It is clear that there will be a high cost and that all this will have to be discussed if there is a military intervention against Ukraine," when pressed on whether NSII would factor into potential sanctions against Russia.
  • The chancellor also stated that "We expect Russia to de-escalate the situation...This could include, for example, a reduction of troops on the Ukrainian border."
  • Comes as his Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock held talks in Moscow with Russian counterpary Sergey Lavrov. On Nord Stream II (which is opposed by the Greens, of whom Baerbock is a member) she stated that, "We have reiterated again and again, at different levels of this federal government, that should energy be used as a weapon [by Russia], that would then also have appropriate consequences with regard to this pipeline."
