German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned of severe economic and political consequences if Russia escalates military aggression toward Ukraine.

  • Scholz is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 15 and is expected to be firmer with Putin on the prospect of sanctions.
  • The German Chancellor has been criticised by Western media for a perceived soft touch with Russia, a label which he tried to shed at a recent White House meeting with President Biden.
  • Scholz: 'What is at stake at the moment is nothing less than preventing a war in Europe. We want peace.'
  • 'Further military aggression by Russia against Ukraine would have very serious political, economic and strategic consequences for Russia … at the same time, we are ready for serious talks with Russia, for a dialogue on European security issues.'
