Schumer: Speaker Johnson's Israel Bill "Woefully Inadequate"

US

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), speaking on the Senate floor ahead of a procedural vote on President Biden's nominee for ambassador to Israel Jack Lew, has criticised House Speaker Mike Johnson's (R-LA) decision to advance legislation on Israel independent of Biden's supplemental funding request.

  • Schumer's combative tone foreshadows a major confrontation between the Senate and the House which, under the stewardship of conservative-aligned Johnson, is expected to present a major obstacle to supplemental funding and push for significant spending cuts as a government shutdown on November 17 looms.
  • Chad Pegram at Fox News reports Schumer told Johnson the only way to get things done were in a bipartisan way, adding that: "In his first major decision as Speaker, Speaker Johnson has ignored that advice."
  • Pegram: Schumer accuses Johnson of preferring tax relief for the wealthy rather than aide for Israel. Questions whether the Johnson bill is "serious." Says the bill is "clearly designed to divide Congress."
  • Burgess Everett at Politico: Schumer says House GOP's Israel aid bill is "insulting" by linking aid to Israel with cutting IRS funding "This kind of unnecessary partisan legislation sends the wrong message... This House GOP proposal is clearly designed to divide Congress on a partisan basis."
  • Jake Sherman at Punchbowl News: Schumer says [Israel] legislation is "woefully inadequate... The new speaker knows perfectly well that if you want to help Israel, you cant propose legislation that is full of poison pills."
