SCOTUS Decision Could Hand Democrats Up To Four Additional House Seats

US

The US Supreme Court made a surprise decision yesterday to rule that Alabama Republicans violated Black voters’ rights during redistricting in 2020.

  • Harvard Law professor, Nicholas Stephanopoulos said, "...this is an absolutely stunning development. I would never have expected this Court to rule fully in favor of the plaintiffs in a Section 2 racial vote dilution case."
  • Axios reports that the decision is “likely to add a blue seat in Alabama, and could add more in Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas.”
  • Dave Wasserman at the Cook Political Report said: "This could reverberate to LA, SC and/or GA, forcing creation of 2-4 new Black majority districts and netting Dems 2-4 seats."
  • Wasserman: "In the wake of the SCOTUS Alabama decision, we're shifting five House ratings in Democrats' direction. It's very likely two formerly Solid R seats will end up in Solid D."
