SECURITY

UKMTO reporting that it has received a report of an incident in the Gulf of Aden 57mn south of the Yemeni city of that name. Says that the vessel's master reported two explosions in the water in close proximity to the ship. The crew are reported safe with the ship continuing under its own steam to its next port of call.

  • This report marks the second incident in less than 24 hours, following an earlier attack on Greek-flagged tanker Sounion that has been left under no command in the Red Sea (see 'SECURITY: Commercial Ship Not Under Command After Likely Houthi Red Sea Strike', 0931BST).
  • Previous attacks, attributed to Iran-backed Houthi rebels, have resulted in retaliation from US and UK forces in the region. An escalation in Houthi attacks on shipping could see further such strikes launched. A Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv in July resulted in Israel launchingsignificant airstrikesagainst the Houthi-controlled port city of Hodeidah later in the month.
