Security Council Meets With Ukraine, Sweden & Greece On Agenda

TURKEY

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to preside over a meeting of the Security Council to discuss, among other issues, the 'grain corridor' through the Black Sea from Ukraine, tensions with Greece, and Sweden's application to NATO.

  • Anadolu reports that "The topic of Ukraine, including the "grain corridor" will also be discussed. The meeting participants will consider Ankara's peaceful mediation initiatives, as well as issues of humanitarian aid supplies and achieving a long-term ceasefire in Ukraine."
  • Also that "Separately, the situation in Sweden will be touched upon, where provocations have recently taken place against Erdogan and the Holy Quran. In the light of these provocations, an exchange of views will take place on the applications of Sweden and Finland to NATO."
  • The Security Council is also set to discuss heightened tensions between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean and East Med. Tensions between the two countries are routinely high, and as two NATO member states the prospect of conflict is slim. However, with Erdogan facing an election campaign and anti-Greek sentiment a valuable campaigning tool for the president there is a non-negligible risk of an escalation that could create a new flashpoint in Europe.
