Security Council To Meet On Burst Ukrainian Dam 1600ET/2100BST

UN

The UN Security Council will meet later today at 1600ET/2100BST to discuss the breach of the Nova Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro River in Ukraine. Earlier, UN Sec-Gen Antonio Guterres stated that the breach was "another devastating consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure must stop. We must act to ensure accountability and respect for international humanitarian law,"

  • Both Russia and Ukraine have denied responsibility for the breach. Military analysts speculate that given the dam appears to have been breached by explosives rather than shelling, it is most likely that Russia is behind the incident, given that the dam sits within territory it occupies.
  • Reuters: "Ukraine accused Russia of an "ecological and technological act of terrorism", while Russia described it as an "act of sabotage carried out by Ukraine"
