SECURITY

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued apublic video statementaddressed to the Iranian people, appearing to promise regime change in Iran. The statement comes as multiple reports suggest that a limited IDF ground incursion into Lebanon may be imminent.

  • Netanyahu said: “When Iran is finally free, and that moment will come a lot sooner than people think — everything will be different... Our two ancient peoples, the Jewish people and the Persian people, will finally be at peace. Our two countries, Israel and Iran, will be at peace."
  • Amichai Stein at Kann reports: "Israeli security cabinet will start in a few minutes. After that - Netanyahu will hold consultation with several ministers the defence echelon"
  • The Washington Post reports that an IDF operation is likely to draw on struggles the IDF experienced during a ground invasion in 2006: "For weeks, troops were bogged down in clashes with Hezbollah fighters, less than a mile into Lebanese territory. Israeli tanks hit explosives or were set ablaze by militants with shoulder-fired missiles: 121 Israeli soldiers died."
  • The New York Times notes: "Israeli commando units have made brief incursions into Lebanese territory in recent days to prepare for a possible wider invasion... although no decision has yet been made about whether or when to begin one..."
  • President Biden just told reporters a short time ago, when asked if he was aware of an IDF operation: “I’m more aware than you might know, and I’m comfortable with them stopping,”
