Reuters reporting comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu amid signs of strain in the ceasefire with Hezbollah, enacted last Wednesday. Netanyahu says: "We are currently in a ceasefire with Hezbollah, not the end of the war." Adds: "We are enforcing this ceasefire with an iron fist, acting against any violation - minor or serious." The comments, consistent with Netanyahu's remarks immediately before approving the ceasefire deal, suggest that the fragile truce is likely to persist despite sporadic exchanges of fire. Netanyahu's comments indicate Israel will continue to keep the option of returning to hostility open as an additional deterrent measure against Hezbollah.
- Amichai Stein at Kan notes that Netanyahu thanked US President-elect Donald Trump for a hawkish message on social media threatening “hell to pay” if a hostage deal in Gaza isn’t reached before he assumes office on January 20. Trump's statement didn't name any specific group, but could be read as a warning to Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
- Netanyahu said: I want to thank [Trump]for his strong statement yesterday. It makesclear that there is one person responsible for this situation - and that is Hamas. President Trump put the emphasis in the right place - on Hamas, and not on the Israeli government... Whoever harms our hostages, like Trump said, will have their blood on their heads"
- White House National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby told reporters yesterday that the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire is still holding, despite a wave of cross-border attacks yesterday.
