Axios reporting that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was "somewhat reassured" by what he heard from US President-elect Donald Trump in a call today that notably came before a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
- Axios: "The call between Trump and Zelensky lasted around 25 minutes, according to the sources who were briefed on its details. After Zelensky congratulated Trump, the president-elect said he will support Ukraine, but didn't go into details."
- The call also included billionaire Trump-backer Elon Musk, who is set to have a prominent role in the new Trump administration and has been involved in the war in Russo-Ukrainian by providing Starlink satellite internet for Ukrainian government, military, and civilian applications.
- Axios notes: "Much went unsaid, and much remains unknown. Trump and Zelensky did not delve into policies like Trump's purported plan to end the war, or the prospect of further U.S. aid, the sources said."
- As such, the baseline scenario remains that Trump is likely to press Zelenskyy to enter a negotiated settlement to the war that will be broadly beneficial to Moscow, expected to include the cession of occupied territories and a neutrality guarantee.
- Laurence Norman at WSJ reports: "European leaders have quietly launched talks on how to help Ukraine fend off Russia’s invasion without Washington’s support, even as they try to convince President-elect Donald Trump not to cut aid to Kyiv."
- Norman notes on X: "...my sense is [European leaders] are a tiny bit more hopeful than they were on this a week ago. But only a tiny bit."
