Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VI) Confirms 2024 Run In Battleground State

US

Senator Tim Kaine (D-VI) has confirmed that he intends to run for a third term in 2024 in which his seat is seen as one of the major battlegrounds that will decide whether Democrats retain control of the Senate.

  • Kaine, who was on the 2016 Democratic presidential ticket as Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential running mate, stated that "I am happy to announce that I will seek re-election in 2024 to keep delivering results for Virginia. I’ve been honored to serve people as a missionary, civil rights lawyer, and elected official.. I love the Commonwealth & its citizens and want to keep being your Senator."
  • Democrats had been concerned that Kaine could drop out, meaning the party loses Kaine's 'incumbency bonus' and leaving an open contest for the seat in 2024. Inside Elections has Virginia's senate seat as 'battleground' in the 2024 vote.
  • The state has not voted for a GOP presidential candidate since incumbent George W. Bush in 2004, and last had a Republican US Senator in 2009. However, Republican Glenn Youngkin unexpectedly took the governorship in 2021 meaning the Republicans will likely be targeting the Senate seat come 2024.
