Senate FR Committee To Continue Congressional Discussions On EU Oil

US-EU

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a hearing on European energy security at the top of the hour.

  • Details of the hearing and a livestream can be followed here: https://www.foreign.senate.gov/hearings/european-e...
  • The hearing is ostensibly focused on the US role in supporting 'Europe's energy diversification agenda' but may provide an indication of policy directions the US may take to hasten the EU Russian energy embargo.
  • The hearing follows a Helsinki Commission hearing on Tuesday which examined effectiveness of sanctions and future energy policy.
  • Yuriy Vitrenko CEO of Ukrainain Naftogaz told the commission: “Due to high energy prices, despite sanctions Russia gets more oil money for its war than it did before the war started”.
  • Rep Steve Cohen (D-TN) co-chair of the Helsinki Commission said: "Putin thinks that if the war ends soon enough, we’ll forgive him because we need his oil and gas. But we don’t. We need to find alternatives and must transition here and abroad to clean energy independence!"
  • Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD): "We must make sure we never again get dependent on a dictator, like Europe was depending on Putin’s gas and oil."
