Senate To Receive Briefing On Artificial Intelligence Tomorrow

All 100 US Senator will tomorrow receive a classified briefing from Defence and National Security officials on the implications of artificial intelligence to global and national security.

  • According to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the briefing will be led by Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, Deputy Defense Sec Kathleen Hicks, Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Director Trey Whitworth, and Pentagon Chief Digital and AI Officer Craig Martell.
  • The briefing will be a significant milestone in Congressional efforts to regulate the technology and develop a framework for controlling the military applications.
  • Schumer said in a letter to colleagues: "This Tuesday we will have a classified all-senators briefing with the Department of Defense and Intelligence Community to learn how we’re using and investing in AI to protect our national security and learn what our adversaries are doing in AI."
  • Much of the briefing is likely to focus on measures designed to maintain a technological advantage in AI over China. The Biden administration is expected to announce expanded export controls on chips to China in the coming weeks.
