Senate Vote On CHIPS Act As Soon As Tuesday

US

Jake Sherman at Punchbowl News has reported that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is planning a vote on the CHIPS bill "as early as Tuesday."

  • The large tech big was made up of two bills. CHIPS, the bill to invest in domestic semiconductor production and USICA, the broader research and development, science, and China competitiveness bill.
  • The bill to be presented to the Senate floor is expected to be stripped of the USICA items and with the core USD$52 billion for semiconductor manufacturing remaining.
  • A source per Politico says "other pieces may be included if ready."
  • Frank Thorp at NBC: "Leader Schumer is telling Senators to expect a floor vote as early as Tuesday to begin the process on a scaled-down bill that would include funding for CHIPS and the investment tax credit from the FABS Act."
  • Passing any form of the bill will be a win for Democrat leadership. Although the bill was largely bipartisan, the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bills proved too challenging to revolve despite three months of conference discussions and ended with an acrimonious blockade of the bill by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
