September Retail Sales Show Weaker Demand

SCANDIS

Swedish retail sales showed a monthly downtick in September, printing at -1.4% M/M SWDA (vs a revised 0.0% prior) and -3.4% Y/Y SWDA (vs -2.1% prior). In Norway, retail sales were steady vs August at -0.3% M/M. Both prints signal a weakening consumer outlook following the end of the summer months.

  • The Swedish print was pushed downwards by a -2.7% M/M fall in durable goods, while consumables (ex-Systembolaget, the state-owned alcohol vendor) rose +0.5% M/M. The weakness in retail sales may be reflected in the monthly consumption figures released on Monday.
  • The Norwegian print was driven lower by sales of food/beverages and other household equipment.
  • EURSEK saw a very minor bounce higher on the release - but now back to pre-data levels. NOKSEK has held steady just below parity.
