Sessions Eliminated In First GOP Speaker Ballot, Maj Whip Emmer Tops Vote

US

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) has been the first candidate eliminated by voting in the race to win the GOP nomination for Speaker of the House of Representatives. This leaves six candidates still in the race, and follows the withdrawals of Reps. Gary Palmer (R-AL) and Daniel Meuser (R-PA) ahead of the first ballot. Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) reports the first round vote as follows: Emmer, 78; Johnson, 34; Donalds, 29; Hern, 27; Scott, 18; Bergman 16; Sessions, 8.

  • As noted in our US Daily Brief we highlighted House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN)'s position as the likely front-runner, and his strong performance in the first ballot would seem to back that up. We also highlighted the prospect of some bipartisan consensus around Emmer's candidacy and the prospect of Democrat abstentions to get him the Speaker's gavel.
  • The count of the second ballot is now underway.
