Sheinbaum Widens Lead, Economic Policy Debate Eyed This Weekend

MEXICO
  • Former Mexico City mayor and ruling party candidate Claudia Sheinbaum has increased her lead in the race for the presidency, according to an opinion poll released on Wednesday, as the country nears the June 02 election.
  • An April 10-13 poll of 1,600 Mexicans for newspaper El Economista gave Sheinbaum, who represents the ruling MORENA party, 51.4% support. Closest rival, Xochitl Galvez, is estimated to receive 26.7% of the vote. The poll showed Sheinbaum’s lead over Galvez widening by 3 percentage points from just one month ago.
  • JPMorgan noted that things look less gloomy for the opposition bloc at the gubernatorial level, stating that although Morena still leads in six out of nine states that will hold gubernatorial elections, the opposition seems to have made progress in the all-important capital, Mexico City. According to a recent poll of polls survey (Polls.mx), there is now a near 10%-pt gap down from 16%. An El Financiero newspaper poll showed the gap down to an even closer 5%, while others point towards a technical tie.
  • On Sunday, candidates will take part in the second presidential debate in which the main topics will circle around economic policy. JPM believe more details on the economic agenda (and their economic staff) for the next six years should be unveiled.
