Shifting LNG Destinations Amid Rising Asia Demand but Fall in Europe

With LNG demand rising in Asia and falling in Europe, there have been some noticeable shifts in the destination of LNG sales, according to Cedigaz.

  • US LNG exports fell 0.2% y/y in Jan-May, but the country remained the largest global exporter with sales of 35.41 million tonnes (mt). Australia sales rose 1.3% y/y to 33.79mt while Qatar fell 0.3% to 32.65mt in the same period.
  • Russia showed the largest absolute increase in exports of 0.88mt with a 6.6% increased y/y due to higher LNG exports from the Sakhalin 2, Vysotsk, and Yamal LNG in March and April.
  • US LNG exports to Asia increased 41% y/y to 9.7mt in Jan-May but sales to Europe fell by 16.4% (4.38mt) to 22.4mt.
  • US exports to China rose 59% y/y to 1.4mt and Japan by 46.3% y/y to 2.34mt while supply to price sensitive buyers such as Bangladesh, India and Thailand also rose.
  • Russian LNG exports to Europe rose 13.2% y/y 7.6mt in Jan-May driven by a 114% increase in imports into France.
  • Egypt’s LNG exports showed the sharpest absolute decline by 2.05mt to 0.72mt as the country switched to become a net gas importer.
