Shipping Concern Remains Despite US Task Force in Red Sea

The US military is trying to reassure shipping companies that the task force to protect the Red Sea route is making it safe to transit despite the threat of Houthi rebel attacks.

  • The Pentagon is “engaged with industry on a near-daily basis to gauge needs and provide reassurance that the international community is there to help with safe passage,” said Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Bryon McGarry.
  • The guided missile destroyer USS Mason yesterday shot down a missile and a drone over the southern Red Sea, according to US Central Command with no damage to ships in the area.
  • Maersk are looking to resume passages “as soon as operationally possible” but cautioned “the overall risk is not eliminated in the area.” Germany's Hapag Lloyd still considers the Red Sea too dangerous with ships diverting around the Cape of Good Hope.
  • The US hoped to present a firm international response to Houthi attacks but many allies of the new maritime force of 20 nations have not been named.
