'Shrinkflation' Targeted with Mandatory Price Warnings - Reuters

  • Hungary's government will require large food retailers from March to display price warnings on products that have shrunk in size, the Economy Ministry said on Monday according to Reuters.
  • Under new rules from March that will be in effect for two months, food retailers with an annual turnover above HUF1bln ($2.9 million) will be required to display price warnings for products that have shrunk in size compared to the period between Jan 1, 2020 and July 1, 2023.
  • Data released this morning showed Hungary’s retail sales fell 5.4% y/y in November (Est: -6.2%) after falling 6.5% y/y in October. That is the highest reading since January 2023. Sales of food, beverages and tobacco fell 0.6% y/y while sales of non-food products fell 3.9% y/y.
