Sixth Round Of Presidential Voting Set To Take Place At 1700CET

ITALY

With the ongoing fifth round of voting in the presidential election unlikely to produce a winning candidate, the process has been sped up, with two rounds of voting taking place among the 1,007 electors per day. The sixth round of voting is set to take place this afternoon at around 1700CET (1100ET, 1600GMT).

  • The fifth round is unlikely to produce a majority winner, with most electors casting blank ballots without a clear majority candidate with cross-spectrum support in the running at present.
  • The centre-right and right has splintered off from the centre and left, having backed Senate Speaker Elisabetta Casellati to succeed incumbent President Sergio Mattarella. Casellati hails from former PM Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia, and is unpopular on the left due to her socially conservative views on abortion and same-sex unions.
  • Earlier, right-wing populist League head Matteo Salvini voiced his support for PM Mario Draghi remaining in office, rather than taking the presidency. The other leading centrist potential candidate alongside Draghi is Senator Pier Ferndinando Casini.
