SLOVAKIA: PM Fico Undergoes 2nd Surgery, Dep PM: Gov't 'Operating Normally'

Deputy PM Robert Kalinak has confirmed that PM Robert Fico underwent another surgery today, and that his confdition remains serious. Kalinak says that 'It will take several days for us to be able to confirm the direction of Fico's recovery', before adding that the Slovak gov't is 'operating normally'. Kalinak add that there is 'progress' in Fico's condition, and that he is hopeful. 

  • Local media reportedearlier today that doctors would meet on 20 May to discuss whether the PM should be moved to a hospital in the capital, Bratislava, from Banska Bystrica where he currently is. The director of the hospital in Banksa Bystrica has said that Fico is concious in the ICU and that his condition is serious. 
  • Aside from the impact of Fico's condition on the future functioning of the gov't, the shooting has seen a major increase in political vitriolon both sides of the pro-/anti-Fico divide, in spite of calls from the president and president-elect for calm and rapprochement between gov't supporters and the opposition.
