Slowing Inflation Boosts Rate-Cut Bets, MPs Resume Debate On Fiscal Austerity Package

  • The koruna depreciated by 0.4% Tuesday as Czechia's inflation undershot market consensus and the CNB's forecast, fanning dovish interest-rate wagers and speculation that the central bank could start loosening monetary policy as soon as next month. The CNB commented that they expect inflation to "decline sharply close to the upper boundary of the tolerance band around the CNB’s 2% target at the start of next year".
  • The Chamber of Deputies resumes the final reading of the government's fiscal consolidation package today, with no specific time for the vote set as of yet. The opposition is trying to exploit all procedural loopholes to delay the vote, while the coalition intends to pass the package by the end of this week.
  • Prime Minister Petr Fiala is willing to support for moving the Czech embassy to Jerusalem, despite opposition from his Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky and President Petr Pavel. Fiala suggested that the ruling coalition will discuss the matter soon.
  • Labour Minister Marian Jurecka will discuss automatic minimum wage adjustments at 09:30BST/10:30CEST, while the Cabinet will start its weekly meeting at 13:30BST/14:30CEST and may debate extending checks on the Slovakian border.
  • Hospodarske Noviny reports that Roman Liptak, a close associate and campaign staffer of former President Milos Zeman, has been hired as an adviser to CNB's Karina Kubelkova.
