GLOBAL MARKET/OPINION: So... turns out a US-China deal is proving hard to come
by after all. Two things of note from the WSJ piece, both hinge on domestic US
politics. 1st: "President Trump... hasn't yet made his decision, and he has
overridden his advisers on trade several times to add tariffs."
- 2nd: "administration officials generally agree with the assessment [that
Republicans lost five seats in the 2018 Congressional elections because of the
tariff war] and are looking for a China deal they can claim as a victory".
- Notes agri buys by China - cementing Midwest support in 2020 - are a big
component for Trump (as article says, Trump's "top priority for a near-term
deal"). Article specifies conditions for Chinese agri buys including quarterly
review of purchases, and that amount of buys wouldn't drop by 10% in any qtr.
- Worth reading the research cited in the article re Republican losses in 2018
partly due to the trade war, if you haven't seen:
