Soc Dems Reach 8-Month High As CPP Overtake Venstre As Main Opposition

DENMARK

Denmark's governing Social Democrats have recorded their highest opinion polling score since June 2020, reaching 35% in the latest YouGov poll. The soft eurosceptic Conservative People's Party (CPP) has also overtaken the main opposition liberal conservative Venstre as the most popular party on the centre-right of Danish politics.

  • YouGov: Social Democrats: 35% (+2), CPP: 15% (+2), New Right: 11% (-1), Venstre: 9%, Danish People's Party: 8% (=), Red-Green Alliance: 7% (=), Greens: 7% (=), Social Liberals: 4% (-1), Liberal Alliance: 2% (-1), Christian Democrats: 1% (-1), Alternative: 1% (=), Vegan Party: 1% (=). +/- vs. 15-18 Jan 2021. Fieldwork: 5-8 Feb 2021. Sample size: 1,261
  • Venstre, one of Denmark's two historically dominant parties alongside the Social Democrats, is polling at its lowest levels on record. An impeachment trial involving the party's deputy leader who served as Denmark's immigration minister in a previous gov't has garnered significant criticism for the party. Venstre is also seeing its support leak away to the rejuvenated CPP - a more traditional conservative party compared to the agrarian Venstre - which is now polling at a multi-year high of 15%.
  • There is also a battle on the far-right of Danish politics, with the right-wing populist Danish People's Party - the third-largest party in the Folketing - hemorrhaging support to the hard-line anti-Islam New Right. The DPP stands at around 8% support, while the New Right would become the third-largest party in parliament according to recent polls.
  • Denmark's next election is not due to be held until June 2023 at the latest, but the strong support for PM Mette Frederiksen's Social Democrats and the disarray among the party's historical main opponents could encourage a snap election once the pandemic comes under control.
