Socialists Poised To Claim Majority Of Seats After Snap Election

PORTUGAL

With 99.13% of votes counted, PM Costa's centre-left Socialist Party (PS) claims victory in Portugal's general election, confirming predictions based on the results of exit polls.

  • The Socialists are poised to take at least 117 seats in the 230-seat legislature after winning 41.68% of votes, up from 108 held before the ballot. The outcome of the election means that PS will now be able to enact legislation without the support of minor left-wing parties.
  • Their main rivals from the centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) scored 27.80%, which will translate into at least 71 seats. It represents a certain reduction from 79 seats held before the election as just 4 seats remain unassigned.
  • The snap poll was called after parliament rejected a budget proposal filed by PM Costa's minority government last autumn.
  • PM Costa said that he would nonetheless encourage alliances with other parties while working on legislative proposals.
