Sources: US Preparing To Dispatch A1 Abrams Tanks To Ukraine

The Wall Street Journal and Reuters are reporting US government sources suggesting that the US is preparing to pivot on approving the transfer of A1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine.

• WSJ: "The Biden administration is leaning toward sending a significant number of Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine and an announcement of the deliveries could come this week."

• The news comes immediately in the wake of a German announcement that the German Ministry of Defence is urgently assessing a formal Polish request to re-export Germany-made Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
• The move by the US represents a policy shift from the Biden Administration who argued throughout the week that the Abrams tank is unsuitable Ukraine to operate due to fuel requirements and operational expertise.
• Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) said on Sunday: "If we announced we were going to give Abrams tanks, just one ... [then Germany] would put Leopard tanks in. And remember, there are about 10 countries that have Leopard tanks, but they need Germany to sign off."
