SOUTH AFRICA: Ramaphosa Quashes Succession Talk, ANC & DA Spar Over Foreign Pol
SOUTH AFRICA
- President Cyril Ramaphosa sought to nip speculation about leadership succession in the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in the bud, warning his colleagues that premature discussions about the possible outcome of the 2027 elective conference would bring no benefit to the party. EWN reported that Ramaphosa made the remarks at the National Executive Committee's (NEC's) special sitting on Sunday after "some have seemingly begun campaigning for positions in the top seven [ANC officials]." In addition, Ramaphosa pledged to strengthen the enforcement of internal disciplinary mechanisms related to state capture.
- The Democratic Alliance (DA) seemingly stepped up its challenge to the ANC's foreign policy stance, with Home Minister Leon Schreiber announcing visa-free access to South Africa for the diplomats and officials from Ukraine, which he called "a valued ally" and "valued friend." The decision was announced without President Ramaphosa's formal authorisation, provoking a reaction from the Presidency, and comes after the head of state called Russia an "ally" during the recent BRICS summit in Kazan, drawing the ire of the DA.
- Today is the deadline for South Africa to file its substantive charge of genocide against Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). EWN reported that the document will contain all facts and evidence collected so far and will form the basis of the case launched by South Africa last December. As a reminder, International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola said last week that he was hoping to table a memorandum on cutting diplomatic ties with Israel by the end of the year.
- Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will deliver his Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) on Wednesday at 12:00GMT/14:00SAST.
