South Africa Says For Now It's Still Planning To Host BRICS Summit

SOUTH AFRICA

Official South African Government news agency runs comments from Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who has just concluded her media briefing on the outcomes of yesterday's Cabinet meeting.

  • Asked about whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit virtually or physically, she told reporters that "when the time comes of a decision of how we would proceed on that matter, the necessary announcement would be made."
  • Ntshavheni added that "we need to allow the inter-ministerial committee to work and report back to the Cabinet," which will then make a decision. The Minister said that for now, the summit of BRICS leaders will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • It has been speculated that the Cabinet was considering moving the summit or part of it to another country or taking it online in order to avoid the legal conundrum posed by an ICC arrest warrant for the Russian President.
