Spain’s Hydro Stocks Fall Again

Spain’s hydropower reserves declined again last week to 58.8% of capacity, down from 60.4% of capacity the week prior, according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Hydropower output last week edged down by 220MW on the week to 3.45GW.
  • Nuclear generation last week rose by 241MW to 6.83GW due to an unplanned outage at Iberdrola’s Confrentes nuclear unit the week prior.
  • Solar PV output last week declined to 8.55GW, down from 9.1GW the week before. Onshore wind output edged lower by 103MW to 5.13GW.
  • Power demand is Spain last week averaged 29.09GW, up from 28.13GW the week before.
  • Looking ahead, the latest 6-10 days ECMWF operational forecast suggested max temperatures in Madrid are expected to reach around 41C this week, likely spurring demand for electric cooling. Mean temperatures in Madrid are forecast to fall from 24-28 July after which temperatures will pick up again.
  • The hydro-intensive region of Huesca has seen no precipitation so far this week. Some precipitation is forecast on 26-29 July to reach up to 1.36mm.
