Spanish Gas flows to Morocco Begin

Gas flows via pipeline from Spain towards Morocco have begun again based on Enagas data today.

  • The decision to send gas to Morocco has angered Algeria which decided not to extend a gas deal to export gas from Algeria to Spain via Morocco last year. Spanish support to offer autonomy to Western Sahara led to Algeria suspending its 20-year friendship treaty with Spain.
  • Algeria have told Spain they do not want their gas re-exported to Morocco.
  • It adds a further layer of supply concern to Europe as the region struggles for gas security ahead of this winter due to a reduction in Russian flows and uncertainty over whether they would be turned off. Spain is being touted as a possible regasification hub to send global gas supplies into Europe though it is poorly connected to do so currently.
