Spanish Hydropower Stocks Continue Decline

Spain’s hydropower reserves continued to decline to 55.4% of capacity as of the end of calendar week 31, down from 57.2% the week prior amid low precipitation and higher power demand according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Hydropower output in Spain last week was broadly stable on the week at 3.22GW.
  • Nuclear generation was broadly stable on the week at 6.83GW.
  • Solar PV generation last week declined by 693MW to 8.2GW. Onshore wind output declined by 364MW to 5.2GW.
  • Gas-fired generation last week increased by 1.63GW to 7.13GW.
  • Power demand is Spain last week averaged 30GW, up from 29.25GW the week before.
  • Looking ahead, the latest 6-10 days ECMWF forecast suggested mean temperatures in Madrid will remain well above the seasonal normal throughout the forecast period, with maximum temperatures around 41C this week.
  • The hydro-intensive region of Huesca has seen no precipitation so far this week, with forecasts suggesting precipitation below 1mm/d this week.
