SPD Gain In All German States As Coalition Talks Look To Get Underway

More detailed results coming through from the 26 September federal election showing that the SPD made gains in every single German state,

  • Increase in SPD vote share by state, lowest to highest: Bavaria: +2,7%, North Rhine-Westphalia : +3,2%, Hesse : +4%, Schleswig-Holstein : +4,7%, Rhineland-Palatinate : +5,2%, Baden-Wurttemberg: +5,3%, Berlin: +5,6% Lower Saxony: +5,7%, Bremen: +5,7%, Hamburg: +6,2%, Saarland: +10,1%, Thuringia: +10,2%, Saxony-Anhalt: +10,2%, Saxony: +10,7%, Brandenburg: +11,9%, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: +14%.
  • SPD made notable gains in the states of the former East Germany (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia), although these were coming off of particularly poor results in the 2017 election.
  • The good result for the SPD puts the party in a strong position ahead of the start of coalition talks, with a link up between the SPD, the Greens, and the FDP seen as the most likely outcome from negotiations at present.
