SPD, Greens, FDP Set To Announce Formal Coalition Talks-Politico

Hans von der Burchard at Politico tweets: "German SPD, Greens & FDP want to sum up results of first talks until Friday (commentators already call it draft coalition treaty), with the aim of launching formal coalition talks afterwards. This is really fast — a Chancellor Olaf Scholz might be in office by early December."

  • The announcement last week of a CDU party congress in December, with party head Armin Laschet set to step down from office, marks a strong indicator that the centre-right party is not expecting to be part of serious coalition negotiations and is likely to enter opposition. This leaves the way open for a Social Democrat-Green-Free Democrat 'traffic light' coalition to be agreed.
  • Even with all negotiating teams keen on an agreement, this marks the first time in post-war history that three parties have entered serious coalition talks at the federal level, meaning reaching a final deal could still take some time to reach.
